works not only of German origin.
Valentin Wagner’s (ca. 1610 – 1655) very well preserved gouache of a “Memento Mori” and the brush drawing with a scene of the “Legend of Joseph” by young Joseph Werner are examples of the 17th century. J. D. Meyer's (1713 – 1752) “Melancholic Shepherd”, in the tradition of 17th Century pastorals, and J.-B. M. Pierre’s (1714 – 1789) fresh sketch of “five male heads of different age” along with the neoclassical composition by A. J. Carstens (1754 – 1798) “The Anger of Achill” represent different styles of the 18th century. The intimate portrait of the crown prince Frederic William (1795 – 1858) reveals a changed self-understanding of the high aristocracy in the 19th century. He shows himself working and can only be recognized by his uniform as high ranking person of his time. Within the ensemble of coastal views at night, the delicateness of the water colour by E. Hildebrandt (1817 – 1868) is touching. In the early 20th century the unknown monographer “B. de B.” expressed his enthusiasm for flying in a dynamic composition: in a double-decker a couple is rushing along above the clouds.
