Daege was a pupil at the Academy of Arts in Berlin from 1820 onwards.
He took up employment at the studio of historical and portrait painter
Karl Wilhelm Wach in 1823. He specialised in historical and genre
paintings, and was also involved in more major commissions such as the
murals in the Schlosskapelle (palace chapel) and the city’s New
Museum.
As professor at the Berlin Academy, he also gave lectures on the
historical genre and religious historic painting. He was director of
the Berlin Academy of Arts from 1861 to 1874. He was appointed the
provisional director of the Wagnerian Collection and the National
Gallery in 1869. He was also a member of the main committee
responsible for organising the World Exhibition in Paris from 1865 –
1867.
