Pupil of Peter von Cornelius in Düsseldorf and Munich and after 1837 court painter to King Ludwig I of Bavaria also employed by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia in Berlin from 1847. He created frescoes based on historical themes for the latter in a "historical-symbolic" style. In addition, he also produced an increasing number of sketches and illustrations from the 1830s onwards, which were extremely well-received by the middle-classes.
