The Two Artists Waving Goodbye to a Friend Leaving Dresden
by Boat, ca. 1845
Pen and black ink, watercolor over preliminary drawing in
graphite, 153 x 108 mm
The drawing executed in the beginning of the artists'
careers captures the two men sending off their mutual
friend. The latter is leaving Dresden via the boat visible
in the background. Both depicting friends from the back, as
well as wistful goodbyes are very typical motifs of
romanticism.
The artists names, as well as their birthplaces are written
underneath the pair. They, too, moved to Dresden recently
and had to deal with separation. In contrast to their
friend, they settled down in the city and became successful.
